Rant: Twig-Sized Models

The other day at work one of my coworkers referred to one of her friends as a... “plus-sized model”. I immediately thought this question, “Is she just a NOT skinny model, or is she a very large woman with a pretty... face?” She then showed us a picture of her. I’m not going to show you that picture out of confidentiality, but here is one of someone comparable (mildly NSFW).

I’m sorry, but she is gorgeous (which is exactly what I thought when I saw the picture of my coworkers friend). Is our society so shallow that if a beautiful woman who gets her picture taken weighs more than 100 lbs we have to call her plus-sized? I am not ok with that at all.

In this context, Webster defines model as: one who is employed to display clothes or other merchandise. Nowhere does it say anything about her looks. Yes, I know that there is a whole culture around this world and that we don’t have to abide by the dictionary’s definition, but if the model is beautiful to anyone, she is simply a beautiful model.

I’ve been told that I find the beauty in women more than most men. Put 100 random women in a room, ask me and other men to give a number of how many we find attractive and I will have the highest number. Women are beautiful creatures, and they need to be told this more often. Men, tell a women you think she’s beautiful this week. Your girlfriend doesn’t count either, you should be telling her that often already. It can be a friend, a coworker or your mother; either way, just do it.

That said, I think that these “plus-sized models” are more attractive then our regular models. Every time women (and men) look at a Cosmo magazine cover, the standard of skinny and covered in makeup gets more and more ingrained in our brains. This is bad for everyone, because not everyone looks like that! Personally, I love curves. Hour-glass figure. There is nothing appealing about this →  | |  to me. I’m not endorsing muffin-tops, women need to dress to their figure, but it drives me crazy when women complain about being “fat”. If you’re weight is not threating to your health, then I have news for you: you are beautiful.

I suggest that we institute a new term: twig-sized model. It is ridiculous that if a woman’s size doesn’t conform to the extreme skinny-ness of current models, then we have to creat a new sub-category of model. A woman referred to as a “plus-sized” model will never be taken as seriously as she should be; not in this culture. I haven’t talked about inner beauty, because when someones job is to get their picture taken, personality doesn’t matter. That however, doesn’t excuse the idiocracy that is classifying bueatiful women by how few pounds they are over the 100 lb mark.
